Program Description
The Boise School District Counseling Program is an
integral part of each school's educational program
supporting a base of academic success for each student.
By design, it is developmental and focuses on milestones
that follow sequentially as pre-school children become
young adults. Counseling programs contain sequential
activities that are organized and implemented by certified
school counselors, teachers and administrators, in
collaboration with students, parents/guardians and
members of the community. All counselors follow the
Boise School District Counseling Model which addresses
student needs in three areas: academic, career and
personal/social.
- Program Management: School Counselors plan,
implement and evaluate a developmental counseling
program. They supervise activities of clerical, paraprofessional
and volunteer personnel related to the counseling
program.
- Guidance Curriculum: School Counselors coordinate
the schools developmental guidance curriculum. They
assist teachers in the teaching of guidance related
curriculum and contribute to interdisciplinary curriculum
development.
- Counseling: School Counselors provide individual
counseling for students. They counsel small groups
of student with similar concerns. Using accepted
counseling theories and techniques appropriate to
school counseling they guide individuals and groups
of students through the development of educational,
career, and personal plans.
- Consultation and Student Advocacy: School
Counselors consult with parents, teachers, administrators
and other individuals to enhance their work with
students. They represent the student needs to others.
- Coordination: School Counselors coordinate
with school and community personnel to bring together
resources for students. They use a referral process
for assisting students and others to use special
programs and services.
- Assessment: School Counselors participate
in the planning and evaluation of the 2005 Boise
School District Strategic Plan. They participate
in the planning and evaluations of the district standardized
testing program. They are skilled in interpreting
test data and career assessment reports. They use
other sources of student data appropriately for assessment
purposes.
Social Workers and Community Resource Workers
Program Description: The Boise School District
Social Worker program offers a variety of services
directly to students, benefiting them in the student
achievement process. Services range from individual
problem solving to small group activities. The primary
function of the social worker is to interface with
community resources, social agencies, law enforcement
and parents. Social Work services are not available
in every school. The role of the social worker is a
site-based decision. School Social Workers have the
knowledge, skill and commitment to help students become
educationally successful. Due to their area of expertise
they may provide individual counseling, small group
support, manage 504 cases, provide students and their
families with drug and alcohol education, intervention
or treatment information. They implement specialized
training for students in conflict mediation and act
as the liaison with local hospitals for students enrolled
in the Boise School District.
