Program Description

The Boise School District has 3,200 English language learners. These students range from fluent English speakers to students just beginning to learn the English language.

The ELL Program currently serves over 1,900 students at 12 elementary magnet sites, 6 junior highs and 4 high schools. Assessment and consultation is also provided to all schools in the District. The program offers intensive English language instruction to students who speak a native language other than English.

Elementary Program (Grades K-6)

1^st through 6^th grade English language learners are enrolled in one of 12 magnet sites- Grace Jordan, Hillcrest, Horizon, Jefferson, Koelsch, Lowell, Mt. View, Morley Nelson, Whitney, White Pine, Whittier or W.H. Taft. Students participate in integrated instruction provided by highly qualified certified and classified staff. Kindergarten students are enrolled in their neighborhood schools unless they have older siblings attending an ELL school.

Secondary Program (Grades 7-12)

The ELL Program at the secondary level consists of several formats. Students living in the United States two years or less may enroll at the Boise Language Academy. This school provides intensive language instruction through content courses and allows students to transition into their new surroundings and home school more effectively. Other secondary students are supported at their home schools through sheltered content classes and/or ELL study skills classes. These classes provide access to the district curriculum through specialized instructional strategies.
