Academic Expectations:

Math: Math instruction will be a collaborative effort between 5th and 6th grades based on student skill levels. Classroom instruction time is spent with students analyzing and discussing sample problems. Building number sense through estimation and mental math activities will strengthen computation and problem solving. Home practice at all levels is essential for providing students the confidence to deepen their understanding of mathematics.


Reading: Reading at school and at home is very important. Reading instruction at school will be comprised of the following: Basal Reading Series with whole group and small group skill specific instruction, Novel Units, and Accelerated Reader. Students will be provided with 30 minutes of independent reading each day and will also need to read at home for an additional 30 minutes per evening.


Langauge: Students will develop writing skills in prose and poetry forms. They will complete daily language lessons that focus on writing in complete sentences with correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. In addition, student will work to develop a stronger vocabulary be defining spelling words and expore their meanings through Greek and Latin roots.


Science: Students will learn about earth, life and physical science through hands-on, inquiry based science kits. Students will study the Earth, Atmosphere and Environmental Issues; Flow of energy and cycling of matter through ecosystems; and Motion and Design.


Social Studies: This year students will develop stronger geography and mapping skills and will explore the diverse facets of Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, South America and Canada.


Technology: Students will be introduced to Basic Operations and Concepts (keyboarding, file management); Social, Ethical and Human Issues (copyright laws, Internet safety); Technology Productivity, Communication, Research, Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Tools.

Grading Policy:

  • Assignments that are not completed at school are considered homework.
  • Assignments are due at the beginning of the following day.
  • Assignments that are not completed when they are due the next day will result in students staying after school for Ninth Hour.
  • Assignments that receive a low grade (below 70%) may be corrected and turned in again for a 70%. These should be turned in within 48 hours of the return date.
  • Assignments missed because of absences are due the day after they return. Additional time for longer absences.
