Welcome to Garfield Elementary --
home of the Grizzlies and very friendly people!
Please
allow me to introduce myself and the counseling program at Garfield
Elementary. I am Kris Lunstrum, and I look forward to working with
Garfield's students, parents and staff. The role of the school
counselor is to support all students' growth and awareness in the
academic, social, personal and career realms. As the school counselor,
I will work together with parents, teachers and staff, and the
community to promote the students' ongoing educational success and
skills development.
Focus areas:
- Classroom guidance: In working with students,
I teach bi-weekly guidance lessons in the classroom. These lessons deal
with academic success, conflict management, personal safety, substance
abuse prevention and career exploration.
- Small groups: I also provide small group
counseling covering a range of topics including stress management, goal
setting, changing families, grief and loss and anger management.
- Individual work with students: I am available
as needed for individual, short-term counseling. If you feel that your
student may benefit from ongoing counseling, I can provide referrals to
communitiy counseling services.
- Parent education: I teach parent education
classes through the Boise School District in the fall and again in the
spring. These classes provide new ideas and strategies for parenting in
a supportive environment.
- Mentoring: Hope to incoporporate a mentoring
program with neighboring high school and/or local community members.
- Parent/staff consultation: Working with
students presents many rewards and challenges to parents and staff
alike. I am available to provide consultation for parents and teachers
regarding all students.
