Questions to Consider
Regarding philosophy:
- Am I supportive of an educational philosophy which
encompasses academic goals as well as: social service, conflict
resolution, interpersonal relationships, environmental education, focus
on process vs. product?
- Am I comfortable with curriculum that includes:
multiculturalism, ecology?
- Am I comfortable with narrative progress reports and
student work portfolios where numerical/letter indicators (grades) and
grad level comparisons are not given?
- Am I prepared to make a six year commitment where
learning objectives are met in a three-year cycle, not by grade levels?
As a parent:
- Am I willing to support and participate in
Montessori activities as well as the traditional strand of school
activities at Liberty Elementary?
- Am I willing to attend all parent education programs?
- Am I able to volunteer in the classroom or on
committees to support the entire school?
Is my child:
- Able to follow through independently with minimum of
adult direction?
- Able to focus in a busy environment in which many
activities are going on at once?
- Able to work at an individual pace within a
multi-age classroom?
Input of current Montessori families
For the first time ever, my son is excited to go to
school! He is learning at his own pace and is allowed to explore
interest areas in more depth. When I asked him how school was the other
day, he told me that school was fun! This is a far cry from the student
who would drag his backpack with his head down dreading school. We are
very lucky for this opportunity and thankful for the efforts of the
Boise School District and the parents who began this program.
Donna Hutchison
I am so pleased that the Boise School District
recognizes the value of choice in education. My daughter flourished in
a Montessori pre-school and I am thrilled she has the opportunity to
build on that in a public school setting. The enthusiasm for this
program is infectious and the school’s dedication to excellence in
education is apparent in everything they do.
