School Nurses
Helping children to be happy, healthy, fit, and ready to learn.

My name is Sarah Olsen-Smith. I have been a school nurse in the Boise School District since fall 2000.

As a school nurse my primary role is to support student learning. This is accomplished by implementing strategies that promote student health and safety. I also help to coordinate school based health programs for students and staff.

Some of the more common questions about student health services provided in the Boise School District are addressed at this site. For additional information, please feel free to contact me by e-mail ( ) or by telephone at your child’s school.

Medications

Ideally, all medication should be given at home. However, students with chronic illnesses and long-term health conditions as well as students recovering from temporary illnesses may need to have medication in the school setting.

For the safety of all students medication should be brought to school by the parent or guardian. In the Elementary setting all medications will only be administered in the Health Office, with the exception being prescribed inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors.

Medications may not be given at school without the written consent of a parent or guardian. Long-term medications require the completion of an “Authorization for Medication Administration” form, available in the school Health Office and here on the Boise School District web site.

For short-term medication (less than 3 weeks) a parent may provide a dated and signed note with the name of medication, dose and directions for use.

All medications must come to school in the original container with instructions for administering. Pills in baggies, pockets, or backpacks are not acceptable and can not be given.

Immunization Policy

Idaho Law states that all children attending public schools be fully immunized. Please send updated records immediately or prior to entering school in the fall. Please check your child’s immunization record to see if it meets the requirements below.

  • 5 doses of DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis)
  • 3 doses of Polio
  • 2 doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • 3 doses of Hepatitis B

or have a valid medical, religious or personal exemption form on file.
