Student Dress Code
School Uniform Dress Code:
Students clothing and grooming shall be appropriate at all
times. "Appropriate" is defined
as clothing, which is non-disruptive and does not interfere
with the
educational process. "At all times" is defined
as during school hours. The School Board is permitted to
adopt dress codes mandating the use of school uniforms. The
purpose of the School Uniform Dress Code shall be to provide
additional opportunities for increased school safety, to
encourage students to experience a greater sense of school
identity and belonging, to encourage an improvement in student
behavior, and to encourage a high level of program participation.
Appearance Guidelines:
Students are expected to be neat, clean, and avoid extremes.
Uniforms are to be kept in good condition. Students are not
to wear or carry items of apparel (clothing, accessories,
cosmetics, tattoos, jewelry --- including body piercing)
which depict or allude to, by picture, symbol or word: drugs,
including alcohol and tobacco; controlled substances; drug
paraphernalia; gangs; violence; sexually explicit, lewd,
indecent or offensive material, or illegal acts.
The following are student uniform dress code guidelines:
Shirt:
- Polo: Solid white or green short or long sleeve
- Students are not required to tuck in shirts.
- Undershirt: white, green, gray, or black.
- Designs, emblems, insignias, monograms and logos are prohibited.
Skirts/Shorts/Slacks/Skorts:
- Solid color: Khaki or black
- No skinny, jean style or jean material.
- Must be worn at waistline
- Designs, emblems, insignias, monograms and logos are prohibited
Skirts:
- Solid color: Khaki or black
- Must be worn at waistline
- Length: Finger tip length or longer
- Can be pleated, flat, or A-line
Shorts:
- Solid color: khaki or black
- Must be worn at the waistline
- Length: Finger tip length or longer (length can be cuffed
or not cuffed)
- Can be pleated or flat
Skorts:
- Solid color: khaki or black
- Must be worn at the waistline
- Length: Finger tip length or longer (length can be cuffed
or not cuffed)
- Can be pleated, flat, or A-line
Slacks:
- Solid color: khaki or black
- No elastic or gathered at the ankles. No cuts, tears, shred,
or frayed in pant legs.
- Must be hemmed and length not to exceed top of shoe (hem
can be cuffed)
- Must be worn at waistline
- Parachute, wind, stretch/warm-up, skinny, and jean style
pants are prohibited
- Capri pants are allowed
- Can be pleated or flat front
Belts:
- Solid color and solid material: Black, khaki,
or brown
- Belts are optional when wearing slacks, skorts, skirts, or
shorts with belt loops
- Appropriate length for waist size
- No dangling belts if worn.
- Design emblems, insignias, monograms, logos, studs, etc...are
prohibited
Hose/Tights/Knee Socks/Ankle Socks:
- Color: green, black, white, tan, cream
- West approved logo.
Shoes:
- Shoes may be tie, buckle, Velcro, or Slip - on
(tennis shoes are acceptable)
- Shoes shall be properly tied, if applicable (No dragging
shoe laces)
- No house slippers or shoes that look like or resemble slippers
Sweaters/Sweatshirts:
(Recommended that sweater or sweatshirt be kept in locker)

Solid color: grey, dark green, white, or black.
- Designs, emblems, insignias, monograms and logos are
prohibited—excepting
West Junior High approved (with West logo). Borah sweatshirts
maybe worn if they are in compliance with approved colors.

Loose fitting pull-over or zipper, cardigan, or fleece vest
preferred. Full zipper hooded sweatshirts are being phased
in as a preferred sweatshirt for school year 2010 - 2011.
Outerwear:
- Outerwear (winter coat/rain coat) may not be
worn to class.
- Trench coats are prohibited.
- Outerwear may be any color and with or without hood.
General Uniform Rules:
- The school uniform must be worn properly at all times
when the student is on school grounds during school hours.
- Uniforms,
for hygienic reasons, may not be stored in student lockers
or P.E. lockers overnight, except sweaters & sweatshirts.
- Uniforms
are expected to be in clean and good condition.
- Students
will not obscure their identity in any way (face paint,
excessive make-up, and sunglasses).
- Exposed chains, oversize jewelry, dog collars, spikes,
piercing, and other articles deemed to be potentially
harmful to students are not permitted.
- No hoods or hats are to be worn on head inside
of the school building.
Consequences:
The consequences for dress code violations are as follows:
- First offense- The student will call home and notify
the parent(s). Student will change clothing item and
be placed in the In-house Detention program for the remainder
of
the day.
- Second offense- The student will call home and notify
the parent(s). Student will change clothing item and
be placed in the In-house Detention program for the remainder
of the
day, and may be assigned one after school detention (Thursday
School, 2:30-5:30).
- Third offense- Student will call a parent and go
home for the remainder of the day.
